With Kuroyuki still in the hospital and Haru having managed to gain some allies here and there, his latest move introduced him to someone pretty cunning and powerful in the previous episode with Aqua Current. His intention of hiring her own as a bodyguard of sorts is pretty good thinking when you get down to it and she’s ideally suited to him because his rating is so low at this point and there are so many potential challengers that she’s lining up the right opponents for him. The trick to it is to get him to gain powers, points and ability quickly by going to higher levels that he’s not ready for while she takes point on it and protects him. It’s standard MMORPG planning to be sure that’s been around for years and years. So seeing it applied here is rather welcome since it shows the right path for Haru to take to quickly grow and be able to survive.

While this makes for good planning, I have to admit it makes for a less than thrilling episode. On the positive side, it’s filled with lots and lots of action as Silver Crow and Aqua Current work together in different ways to get him leveled up. He learns some decent tricks along the way that might serve him well when he’s on his own again and he gets the points he needs to really move along to be in a better place to defend himself as everything else starts to ramp up. But it’s also something that is wheel spinning for me because it doesn’t do all that much besides that. While I do like the action on a basic level here, it doesn’t really engage me all that much as I prefer the character material and the general threats and exploration of the dangers of the technology. The fights are again well choreographed though and the CG animation for it works very well in this context too.

In Summary:
Accel World does have some forward progress here in some small ways as Haru gets more skilled and Aqua Current may be someone to contend with as the show goes on. There’s something a little different about her, especially how she presents herself in the real world, that could lead to some interesting material as it goes on. What we get here though is largely bodyguard work to help him level up and it’s decent and well done, but it leaves you wanting for something a bit meatier to the story as well. After the way the series has been on an upward swing for me recently, this one was more of a leveling off than anything else, though it has me hopeful for it to keep going in the right direction as it shifts back to the school setting.
