The Review: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
The first episode of this second season, named Kingdom of Magic instead of Labyrinth of Magic, starts with a teaser that seems to be well into the future of the first season. Our heroes, Aladdin, Alibaba, and Morgiana, are spread out across the land but all appear to be converging on Aladdin’s current location, in the midst of a battle.
We return to immediately following the capture of Zagan following the opening. A celebration is taking place, and as in the first season, the animation for the action scenes is well above the animation for the non-action scenes. Particularly the dancing from a celebration from last season was piss poor compared to the few seconds in the opening. It’s the same here, as they’re putting on a play displaying their heroic feats against Zagan and it really isn’t anything nice.
Things kick off from there when Sinbad asks Aladdin to be the Magi for Sindria. Sinbad has come a long way from the naked man we first ran into. Aladdin, as well, as grown considerably from the face-in-boobs kid. But both have a long way to go before they can team up to the success of Leam. But Aladdin’s power is exemplified when he tries to help Dunya from the Dark Metal Vessel that’s consumed her. Aladdin’s power has certainly grown by leaps and bounds since the beginning and this moment only further shows that. What this really did for Aladdin was make him realize that he needs some separation from his friends—which will likely lead to that teaser.
The first season ended with a lot of loose ends to tie up, and the first episode suffered for it. Things couldn’t really happen in itself until the aftermath was wrapped up. Despite that, Magi is still as enjoyable as I remember the first season and the first volume of the manga being. What the episode does prove is that everyone has a lot of growing to do. This season will be their journey through that, and I’m looking forward to it.
