Announced back in May, it’s been a pretty quiet period for the next Luc Besson film with Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The film is set to go into production in December of this year with plans for a summer 2017 release.Besson has cast Dan DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as the leads previously and now he’s expanding the cast a bit with Clive Owen now set to be a part of the production. In the film, Owen will play Commander Arun Filitt. With there being something like twenty-two books in the series since it began, the most recent in 2013, there isn’t an in-depth look at the characters and no details about the role beyond the name.
During SDCC when Besson first talked about the film, he said he thought he had the script ready several years ago, but tore it up after watching Avatar and realizing he had a lot more work to do. Now, he is ready.
The project is based on the French graphic novel series from Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres that dates back to 1967.
Plot concept: DeHaan and Delevingne will play Valerian and Laureline in the adaptation of the original story, which centered on a pair of spatio-temporal agents who help defend a utopian 28th century Earth and its neighbor.
